is\u00a0undoubtedly\u00a0the most famous\u00a0constellation\u00a0in the sky of\u00a0winter, and one of\u00a0the best known\u00a0among\u00a0the 88\u00a0currently recognized\u00a0by the\u00a0IAU (International Astronomical Union).\u00a0Its\u00a0bright stars\u00a0visible from both\u00a0hemispheres\u00a0make this\u00a0constellation\u00a0globally recognized and\u00a0in my opinion\u00a0the most fascinating.\u00a0It has been called\u00a0&#8220;<strong>The Cathedral\u00a0of Heaven<\/strong>&#8220;, a name\u00a0which I subscribe\u00a0enthusiastically.<\/p>\n<p>It is located\u00a0right in the middle\u00a0of the\u00a0celestial\u00a0equator, and is used\u00a0as a reference\u00a0for others,\u00a0as we shall see.\u00a0Orion\u00a0resembles a\u00a0person.\u00a0First, try\u00a0to locate\u00a0the belt\u00a0of Orion,\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/bitacoradegalileo.files.wordpress.com\/2010\/02\/orionimagen3.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-thumbnail wp-image-68\" title=\"orionimagen\" src=\"http:\/\/bitacoradegalileo.files.wordpress.com\/2010\/02\/orionimagen3.jpg?w=102\" alt=\"\" width=\"102\" height=\"150\" \/><\/a>\u00a0which consists of three\u00a0bright stars\u00a0in a straight line\u00a0(<strong>Alnitak<\/strong>, <strong>Alnilam\u00a0<\/strong>and\u00a0<strong>Mintaka<\/strong>, from left\u00a0to right).\u00a0One of his legs\u00a0is represented by a\u00a0bright star\u00a0called\u00a0<strong>Rigel<\/strong>, which is\u00a0one of thebrightest stars in the\u00a0night sky.\u00a0The other leg\u00a0corresponds to\u00a0the star\u00a0Saiph.\u00a0His\u00a0two shoulders\u00a0are\u00a0the stars\u00a0<strong>Bellatrix\u00a0<\/strong>and\u00a0<strong>Betelgeuse<\/strong>.\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/bitacoradegalileo.files.wordpress.com\/2010\/02\/constelacion-orion3.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-medium wp-image-56\" title=\"constelacion-orion\" src=\"http:\/\/bitacoradegalileo.files.wordpress.com\/2010\/02\/constelacion-orion3.jpg?w=270\" alt=\"\" width=\"270\" height=\"300\" \/><\/a>This last one is\u00a0so bright that\u00a0you can see\u00a0its reddish color\u00a0without\u00a0the help of\u00a0telescopes or\u00a0binoculars,\u00a0just\u00a0the naked eye.\u00a0A\u00a0fainter\u00a0star, <strong>Meissen<\/strong>, corresponds to\u00a0the head.\u00a0The whole\u00a0is identified with\u00a0the myth of the\u00a0giant Orion, the hunter.<\/p>\n<p>The other\u00a0stars\u00a0of the constellation\u00a0with proper name\u00a0are\u00a0<strong>Tabit<\/strong> (the shield), and <strong>Hatysa\u00a0<\/strong>(the sword), also called\u00a0Nair\u00a0Al\u00a0Saiph.<\/p>\n<p><strong>MAIN STARS<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The brightest stars\u00a0of the constellation\u00a0are <strong>Rigel<\/strong>, <strong>Betelgeuse<\/strong>, <strong>Bellatrix<\/strong>, <strong>Alnilam<\/strong>, <strong>Alnitak<\/strong>,<strong>Saiph<\/strong>,\u00a0<strong>Mintaka\u00a0<\/strong>and\u00a0<strong>Hatysa<\/strong>,\u00a0in that order.\u00a0These stars are\u00a0at different distances from\u00a0us,and\u00a0their form in\u00a0space is only\u00a0a flat projection, which\u00a0from another point\u00a0of view\u00a0would appear\u00a0quite different, ruining\u00a0all the\u00a0rivers\u00a0of ink\u00a0spilled\u00a0about the shape\u00a0the constellation.<br \/>\n<a href=\"http:\/\/bitacoradegalileo.files.wordpress.com\/2010\/02\/proyeccionorion.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-72\" title=\"proyeccionorion\" src=\"http:\/\/bitacoradegalileo.files.wordpress.com\/2010\/02\/proyeccionorion.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"450\" height=\"244\" \/><\/a><br \/>\nWe will stop\u00a0briefly at\u00a0each of\u00a0these luminaries:<\/p>\n<p><strong>Rigel\u00a0<\/strong>is the star\u00a0Beta\u00a0Orionis.\u00a0Although its\u00a0designation of\u00a0Bayer &#8220;Beta&#8221;\u00a0should correspond\u00a0to the second\u00a0brightest star in\u00a0the constellation,\u00a0its apparent magnitude\u00a0of+0.18\u00a0indeed places it\u00a0as\u00a0the\u00a0brightest of\u00a0it\u00a0ahead of\u00a0Betelgeuse\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/bitacoradegalileo.files.wordpress.com\/2010\/02\/rigel_sun_comparision.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-thumbnail wp-image-73\" title=\"Rigel_sun_comparision\" src=\"http:\/\/bitacoradegalileo.files.wordpress.com\/2010\/02\/rigel_sun_comparision.png?w=150\" alt=\"\" width=\"150\" height=\"130\" \/><\/a>(Alpha\u00a0Orionis)\u00a0being the fifth\u00a0brightest\u00a0all over the\u00a0night sky.\u00a0According to estimates by Hipparcos\u00a0satellite\u00a0,\u00a0its distance from the Sun\u00a0is\u00a0about 860\u00a0light-years.\u00a0This is a\u00a0triple star system\u00a0whose\u00a0main component is a\u00a0blue-white\u00a0supergiant\u00a0with a surface temperature\u00a0of 11,500\u00a0\u00b0\u00a0K.\u00a0Glows\u00a0with a\u00a0brightness\u00a0in the visible spectrum\u00a0over\u00a050,000 times\u00a0of the Sun&#8217;s and\u00a0of 85,000\u00a0suns in\u00a0bolometric\u00a0scale.\u00a0Its\u00a0radius is equal\u00a0to\u00a084 times our star, so\u00a0if it were in\u00a0the place of the Sun, it would extend\u00a0to the orbit of Mercury.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/bitacoradegalileo.files.wordpress.com\/2010\/02\/betelgeuse_star_hubble.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-thumbnail wp-image-77\" title=\"Betelgeuse_star_(Hubble)\" src=\"http:\/\/bitacoradegalileo.files.wordpress.com\/2010\/02\/betelgeuse_star_hubble.jpg?w=150\" alt=\"\" width=\"150\" height=\"150\" \/><\/a><strong>Betelgeuse<\/strong>, also called\u00a0Alpha\u00a0Orionis, is a beautiful\u00a0red star,\u00a0the ninth\u00a0brightest\u00a0in the sky, big\u00a0and bright,\u00a0for it is\u00a0a red supergiant.\u00a0The\u00a0characteristic color of\u00a0this star\u00a0comes from\u00a0the lowsurface temperatures, 3,000\u00a0\u00b0\u00a0K.\u00a0It is\u00a0a variable star,\u00a0and\u00a0its maximum size\u00a0would extendbeyond the\u00a0orbit of Mars.\u00a0It is\u00a0about 800\u00a0times larger\u00a0than the Sun. It is\u00a0located\u00a0about 650\u00a0light years from the\u00a0Solar\u00a0System\u00a0and its\u00a0visual\u00a0magnitude\u00a0is between\u00a0+0.5 and+1.3.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Bellatrix<\/strong> (Gamma Orionis)\u00a0is the third\u00a0brightest star in\u00a0the constellation,\u00a0with apparent magnitude\u00a0+1.64.\u00a0Bellatrix&#8217;s name, the\u00a0Amazon\u00a0Star, comes\u00a0from Latin and\u00a0means &#8220;warrior.&#8221;\u00a0It is\u00a0a blue giant\u00a0with a surface temperature\u00a0of 21,500\u00a0K,\u00a0one of\u00a0the hottest stars\u00a0you can see\u00a0at a glance.\u00a0It is6400\u00a0times brighter\u00a0than our Sun,\u00a0and 5.7\u00a0times larger\u00a0than this.\u00a0It is situated\u00a0about 250light years\u00a0from us.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Alnilam<\/strong> (Epsilon Orionis) is,\u00a0with apparent magnitude\u00a0+1.7,\u00a0the fourth\u00a0brightest star in\u00a0Orion.\u00a0This is the\u00a0central star of the\u00a0Belt,\u00a0and the brightest\u00a0of the three,\u00a0despite being\u00a0the farthest, about\u00a01340 years-years away.\u00a0It is\u00a0a blue supergiant,\u00a0whose brightness\u00a0is extraordinary,\u00a0equivalent to about\u00a0375,000\u00a0times the luminosity\u00a0of the Sun.\u00a0Alnilam\u00a0is very hot,\u00a0about 25,000\u00a0K and\u00a0its diameter\u00a0is 31 times\u00a0the Sun&#8217;s.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Alnitak<\/strong> (Zeta Orionis) is a triple star system\u00a0also part\u00a0of Orion&#8217;s Belt.\u00a0The\u00a0main component is a\u00a0blue supergiantof\u00a0apparent magnitude\u00a0+1.89, located about\u00a0800 light-years\u00a0from Earth.\u00a0It is very\u00a0hot,about 31,000\u00a0K,\u00a0and its mass\u00a0is estimated at about\u00a020 solar masses<a href=\"http:\/\/bitacoradegalileo.files.wordpress.com\/2010\/02\/cinturonorion.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-medium wp-image-79\" title=\"cinturonorion\" src=\"http:\/\/bitacoradegalileo.files.wordpress.com\/2010\/02\/cinturonorion.jpg?w=300\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"266\" \/><\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Saiph<\/strong> (Kappa Orionis) is the sixth\u00a0brightest.\u00a0Has a magnitude of\u00a0+2.06\u00a0and is located\u00a0about 720\u00a0light-years away.\u00a0With a surface temperature\u00a0of 26,000\u00a0K,\u00a0is\u00a0a blue supergiant\u00a0with a radius\u00a011times the\u00a0solar\u00a0radio.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Mintaka<\/strong> (Delta Orionis) is the third of\u00a0the stars in the\u00a0Belt,\u00a0and\u00a0the faintest\u00a0of them, with a magnitude\u00a0of\u00a0+2.23jointly, because\u00a0it is a\u00a0complex\u00a0multiple star.\u00a0It is\u00a0is\u00a0a blue star\u00a0at 915\u00a0light years and\u00a0has a temperature\u00a0of 30,000\u00a0\u00b0\u00a0K.\u00a0Its mass\u00a0is equivalent to\u00a020 suns.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Hatysa<\/strong> (Iota Orionis) is found in\u00a0the Sword of\u00a0Orion, and\u00a0with a magnitude of\u00a0+2.75\u00a0is the brightest\u00a0of\u00a0which make\u00a0said\u00a0sword.\u00a0Also known as\u00a0<strong>Na&#8217;ir\u00a0to\u00a0Saif<\/strong>.\u00a0No\u00a0one knows the\u00a0distance that\u00a0it is located, speculating\u00a0with numbers\u00a0ranging from\u00a01300 to 2000\u00a0light-years away.\u00a0It is\u00a0a blue giant\u00a0that is\u00a031,500\u00a0\u00b0\u00a0K\u00a0temperature,\u00a0i.e. more\u00a0than 25,000\u00a0K\u00a0hotter\u00a0than the Sun.\u00a0Its mass\u00a0is equal to 15\u00a0times\u00a0our star.<\/p>\n<p><strong>M42: THE GREAT NEBULA IN ORION.<\/strong><br \/>\n<a href=\"http:\/\/bitacoradegalileo.files.wordpress.com\/2010\/02\/gm42-1.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-thumbnail wp-image-87\" title=\"gm42-1\" src=\"http:\/\/bitacoradegalileo.files.wordpress.com\/2010\/02\/gm42-1.jpg?w=150\" alt=\"\" width=\"150\" height=\"120\" \/><\/a><br \/>\nIn the center\u00a0of the <strong>Sword of\u00a0Orion<\/strong>,\u00a0below the belt\u00a0is distinguished,\u00a0with the naked eye, adiffuse\u00a0spot\u00a0sometimes confused\u00a0with a star.\u00a0It is the\u00a0object of\u00a0<a title=\"Messier Catalog\" href=\"http:\/\/www.bitacoradegalileo.com\/en\/messier-catalog\/\">Charles\u00a0Messier&#8217;s catalog<\/a>\u00a0number 42, <strong>M42<\/strong>, known\u00a0as the <strong>Great\u00a0Nebula\u00a0of Orion<\/strong>.\u00a0It is a\u00a0diffuse nebula, one of\u00a0the brightest\u00a0that exist,\u00a0which can be seen\u00a0without optical aid.\u00a0Located\u00a0around\u00a01,500 light years\u00a0from us, has a diameter\u00a0of about 30\u00a0light-years.\u00a0At first sight\u00a0appears blurry, but with\u00a0simple\u00a0telescopes,\u00a0or simply with binoculars\u00a0it can be\u00a0seen\u00a0quite clearly<a href=\"http:\/\/bitacoradegalileo.files.wordpress.com\/2010\/02\/m421.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-full wp-image-89\" title=\"m42\" src=\"http:\/\/bitacoradegalileo.files.wordpress.com\/2010\/02\/m421.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"450\" height=\"359\" \/><\/a>. Optical images\u00a0show that\u00a0this is a\u00a0huge\u00a0cloud\u00a0of\u00a0gas\u00a0and dust.\u00a0Contains within\u00a0newly formed\u00a0stars, interstellar clouds, star clusters,\u00a0H\u00a0II\u00a0regions\u00a0Hydrogen\u00a0(ionically\u00a0active) and\u00a0reflection nebulae.\u00a0The little\u00a0cloud\u00a0that appears\u00a0torn\u00a0at the top\u00a0is the\u00a0<strong>De Marian&#8217;s nebula<\/strong>\u00a0, or\u00a0<strong>M43<\/strong>.\u00a0Several\u00a0factions\u00a0of the nebula\u00a0have their\u00a0own name.\u00a0The\u00a0dark path\u00a0that extends from\u00a0the north to\u00a0the bright region\u00a0called the\u00a0<strong>Fish&#8217;s Mouth<\/strong>,\u00a0and the light regionson both sides\u00a0are called\u00a0<strong>Wings<\/strong>.<a href=\"http:\/\/bitacoradegalileo.files.wordpress.com\/2010\/02\/m42_trapecio.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-thumbnail wp-image-90\" title=\"m42_trapecio\" src=\"http:\/\/bitacoradegalileo.files.wordpress.com\/2010\/02\/m42_trapecio.jpg?w=150\" alt=\"\" width=\"150\" height=\"148\" \/><\/a><br \/>\nIn this picture\u00a0we see the\u00a0<strong>Trapezium cluster<\/strong>, named for\u00a0the asterism\u00a0of its four\u00a0main stars.\u00a0These stars,\u00a0between 5th\u00a0and\u00a09th magnitude, can be solved\u00a0easily\u00a0with a telescope of\u00a080 mm\u00a0opening.\u00a0They are\u00a0very young stars,\u00a0just formed.<\/p>\n<p><strong>REGION\u00a0ALNITAK<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-112 aligncenter\" title=\"horsehead_steinberg\" src=\"http:\/\/bitacoradegalileo.files.wordpress.com\/2010\/02\/horsehead_steinberg.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"100%\" \/><\/p>\n<p><strong>Alnitak (Zeta Orionis)<\/strong> is,\u00a0may not be amiss\u00a0to remember,\u00a0the star\u00a0to the left\u00a0on the Belt of Orion.\u00a0In the vicinity\u00a0are\u00a0two interesting\u00a0deep sky objects: the\u00a0<strong>Flame\u00a0Nebula<\/strong>\u00a0and\u00a0<strong>Horsehead Nebula<\/strong>.\u00a0The photograph\u00a0shows\u00a0Alnitak,\u00a0the brightest star, and just\u00a0below is the\u00a0<strong>Flame Nebula<\/strong>, which gets its\u00a0name from its\u00a0appearance of being\u00a0on fire.The bright star\u00a0located\u00a0at the top right\u00a0is <strong>Sigma\u00a0Orionis<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/bitacoradegalileo.files.wordpress.com\/2010\/02\/nebulosacabezadecaballo.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-thumbnail wp-image-113 alignright\" title=\"nebulosacabezadecaballo\" src=\"http:\/\/bitacoradegalileo.files.wordpress.com\/2010\/02\/nebulosacabezadecaballo.jpg?w=150\" alt=\"\" width=\"150\" height=\"108\" \/><\/a> (doesn&#8217;t have a proper name), and at\u00a0the center is\u00a0the <strong>Horsehead<\/strong>, a spectacular\u00a0dark nebula\u00a0of which,\u00a0on the left, we provide a\u00a0detail.<\/p>\n<p>The Great Nebula in\u00a0Orion is a\u00a0very popular\u00a0object\u00a0for\u00a0amateur\u00a0astrophotographers. It takes an apparent extension\u00a0in the sky of over 60&#8242; of arc.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/bitacoradegalileo.files.wordpress.com\/2010\/02\/sirio-y-orion2.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-medium wp-image-101\" title=\"Sirio y Ori\u00f3n\" src=\"http:\/\/bitacoradegalileo.files.wordpress.com\/2010\/02\/sirio-y-orion2.jpg?w=200\" alt=\"\" width=\"200\" height=\"280\" \/><\/a><strong>ORION AS A GUIDANCE\u00a0COUNSELOR<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><em>The Constellation\u00a0of Orion\u00a0and Sirius.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>In the following paragraphs\u00a0we will use\u00a0the stars of\u00a0the constellation Orion, already known,\u00a0to locate\u00a0other significant\u00a0stars and constellations\u00a0in the night sky\u00a0in the winter,southern summer.\u00a0We will do this\u00a0using\u00a0graphics that\u00a0reproduce\u00a0quite accurately\u00a0the situation,\u00a0regarding our\u00a0constellation,\u00a0of the stars that\u00a0we are going to\u00a0find.\u00a0We will do this\u00a0by drawing an imaginary line\u00a0from Orion\u00a0to the star\u00a0in question.<\/p>\n<p>This\u00a0first scheme\u00a0recreates\u00a0the picture above, and shows how,<a href=\"http:\/\/bitacoradegalileo.files.wordpress.com\/2010\/02\/escanear0001.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-medium (Greater\u00a0Dog).\u00a0The inhabitants of the\u00a0<em>Southern Hemisphere<\/em>\u00a0should be aware\u00a0that his view\u00a0differs from the\u00a0Boreal\u00a0by 180 \u00b0.<\/p>\n<p><img the\u00a0principal in the\u00a0constellation\u00a0<strong>Taurus<\/strong>.\u00a0A little further\u00a0we appreciate\u00a0the\u00a0open star cluster\u00a0<strong>M45<\/strong>, the magnificent\u00a0<strong>Pleiades<\/strong>,\u00a0which will be\u00a0our next work.\u00a0With regard\u00a0to the Southern Hemisphere, we must make\u00a0the same\u00a0observation we made\u00a0at the time\u00a0of the\u00a0previous scheme.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/bitacoradegalileo.files.wordpress.com\/2010\/02\/triangulo-invierno2.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" the\u00a0<strong>Winter Triangle<\/strong>, whose third\u00a0vertex\u00a0will be\u00a0<strong>Procyon\u00a0<\/strong>,\u00a0a very brilliant\u00a0star, which\u00a0is the\u00a0main member\u00a0of the constellations\u00a0and\u00a0principal stars, thereby increasing\u00a0our knowledge\u00a0of Heaven and\u00a0Outer Space\u00a0without effort,\u00a0but with\u00a0love and sea,\u00a0and\u00a0Gaia,\u00a0Mother Earth.\u00a0He had\u00a0an extraordinary beauty and\u00a0grew so much\u00a0that became\u00a0a genuine\u00a0giant.\u00a0So enormous\u00a0he was\u00a0he could walk\u00a0along the bottom\u00a0of the deep sea\u00a0waters\u00a0without ever\u00a0cover\u00a0him\u00a0from the shoulders up.<br \/>\nAfter many adventures, Orion\u00a0went to\u00a0the island of Chios, where\u00a0soon\u00a0later\u00a0fell in love with\u00a0Merope,\u00a0the daughter of King\u00a0Oenopion.\u00a0Such was his\u00a0love for her\u00a0that\u00a0sought her in marriage.\u00a0Oenopion\u00a0consented,\u00a0but first\u00a0demanded\u00a0the giant\u00a0to prove his\u00a0courageperforming a\u00a0difficult mission.\u00a0Orion\u00a0would have to\u00a0kill\u00a0a large number of\u00a0pests\u00a0that were causing\u00a0huge losses\u00a0to crops\u00a0on the island.\u00a0When he had\u00a0exterminated\u00a0all the\u00a0vermin,\u00a0the monarch\u00a0refused
