We know that the Sun, the most prominent object in the sky, rises from the east, gets higher in the sky up to its maximum in the North, which also receives the name of midday, and then begins to descend, until it dies in the western horizon.<\/p>\n<p>We also know that\u00a0this movement of the\u00a0sun\u00a0is not so,\u00a0but actually an optical illusioncaused\u00a0by\u00a0the\u00a0Earth&#8217;s rotation\u00a0around its own axis, completing\u00a0one full revolution\u00a0every 24\u00a0hours, period\u00a0which we have\u00a0agreed to call\u00a0&#8220;day.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>But\u00a0the Sun\u00a0is not the only\u00a0one who suffers\u00a0the effects of\u00a0Earth&#8217;s rotation,\u00a0but ALL of theheavenly\u00a0bodies, except for\u00a0the\u00a0circumpolar constellations,\u00a0revolving around the\u00a0South Celestial Pole, and\u00a0due to their proximity\u00a0to it,\u00a0never disappear\u00a0below the horizon.<\/p>\n<p>All\u00a0the other stars\u00a0&#8220;come out&#8221;\u00a0from the east, reach their\u00a0highest altitude\u00a0in the North and&#8221;die&#8221;\u00a0or put\u00a0in the west.\u00a0This\u00a0includes the moon\u00a0and all\u00a0planets of the\u00a0Solar\u00a0System.<\/p>\n<p>The immediate consequence\u00a0of this is\u00a0that the stars\u00a0are most clearly seen\u00a0in the North, which is\u00a0where they reach their maximum\u00a0altitude above\u00a0the horizon,\u00a0and therefore avoid air pollution and\u00a0obstacles in our\u00a0line of sight, away from\u00a0the possible\u00a0sources of light pollution\u00a0by\u00a0mercury and sodium\u00a0vapor\u00a0streetlights\u00a0of the\u00a0public and other\u00a0light sources\u00a0in the neighborhood.<\/p>\n<p>There is a\u00a0<em>but<\/em> to this\u00a0general rule: there are many\u00a0stars that\u00a0reach their maximum altitudes upon us, which\u00a0really\u00a0becomes\u00a0uncomfortable,\u00a0it is not\u00a0easy to observe for a held\u00a0while the stars\u00a0that lie just\u00a0above our heads\u00a0.\u00a0With\u00a0certain types\u00a0of telescopes (known as\u00a0refractors), observation\u00a0is\u00a0really\u00a0cumbersome.<\/p>\n<p>That&#8217;s why\u00a0so\u00a0many amateurs, myself\u00a0included,\u00a0prefer\u00a0watching\u00a0halfway between the rising of the\u00a0star\u00a0in question (the East)\u00a0and their transit or culmination (the North), a fact that\u00a0occurs in about\u00a0the Northeast, making\u00a0this point,\u00a0therefore,\u00a0ideal for the\u00a0study and enjoyment of\u00a0the wonders\u00a0of our sky.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>I get to write with the intention of trying to explain how affects the direction of an observatory in the contemplation of heaven to the naked eye or with optical instruments such as binoculars or telescopes.
